Summer Week 6 | Introduction to Closed Containers and Lidded Vessels
With Ron Cole
July 19 - 25, 2026
This program is part of our Summer Program, beginning on Sunday (July 19) and ending on Saturday (July 25). Class runs Monday morning through Friday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Saturday.
In this class, we will explore wheel-thrown ceramic forms that serve as containers. From the flange of a lid to the shoulder of a jar, students will learn the parts of and how to create a variety of lid types and fit them to their adjoining vessels. We will also discuss the various quirks of creating containers for specific items such as sugar, honey, or tea. There are many ways to throw a pot, and many more ways to fill them!
What creative modalities are used in this course?
Ceramic (Wheel-Throwing)
What can I expect to create in this class?
Participants can expect to create a few finished and functional lidded vessels.
What will class time be like?
Class time may begin with a small quote or reading to get creative juices flowing! Monday through Wednesday, classes will be filled with demonstrations and time to work on projects. Depending on the day, there may be a demo, project time, another demo, and then more project time. Thursday and Friday classes will be primarily project time, with demonstrations as necessary. Instructor mentorship is available throughout the course. The goal will be to provide as much time as possible for the student to create!
Will I need to work outside of class?
Ideally, yes. Demonstrations will lower the amount of worktime available at the beginning of the week, so afternoon studio time will be important for project progress. On Thursday and Friday afternoon, open afternoon studio time will not be available to participants.
Do I need experience to take this class?
Participants should be familiar with wheel-throwing and be able to throw a 1 lb cylinder.
What do I need to bring to class?
Participants are encouraged to bring specific project ideals and/or goals. Come with close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy!
