Sculpture: Wood + Stone
With John Thompson
June 25 - July 1, 2023
Students will learn to carve with both stone and wood. Local soapstone and basswood will be provided (potentially some limestone and slate as well). We will be using mainly hand tools (think Michelangelo) with a few power tools under close supervision. Students will learn both relief carving (2 dimensional) and “carving in the round” (3 dimensional). This class can be dirty and dusty but that is what makes it fun!
Class time will include instruction and personal project work time. We will begin with a safety talk, demonstration, and tool talk. Participants will be encouraged to work with wood or stone or both if that is their choice. This class is about skills building so that you can continue to carve anywhere!
