My ongoing life as an enamelist:
This all started in the late 1950s when I received a Trinkit enameling set for Christmas. What a great hobby! Watching powdered glass fuse to a piece of copper, using a hotplate kiln! But very quickly that wasn’t quite enough, so in a few years I got a bigger hotplate kiln–used that while living in Medellin, Colombia for seven years. That was enough for awhile, but I really needed some formal instruction about enameling, so off to Penland School of Crafts from Hampton, VA for short summer classes for three years. Still not enough! Needed to know more about how to work metal, and a BFA in Metalsmithing from Wayne State University in Detroit came next. It was then time to retreat to my studio and get comfortable with all this learning.

I am a member (and past president) of The Enamelist Society and a member of the Northwest Designer/Craft Artists. I have enjoyed teaching classes here in the United State, and in Canada, England, and Venezuela. I have not aught at the Grunewald Guild high in the cascade Mountains in Plain, WA since the summer of 2000, and what a special place it is!
