Angela Sebastian

Angela Sebastian is a Filipina Dance Artist with an MFA in Dance focused on choreography and performance from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM). In the Philippines, she was a member of Airdance Philippines Contemporary Dance and Aerial Arts Company and the University of the Philippines Dance Company (UPDC), wherein she participated in the works of renowned Filipino choreographers like Denisa Reyes, Myra Beltran, and Ma. Elena Laniog-Alvarez presented across countries in Asia, such as Taiwan, Malaysia, and China. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music, Major in Dance at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), Quezon City, she worked for a year and a half for Hong Kong Disneyland as a Parade Dancer and pursue her artistic endeavors by competing in the i-Dance Contemporary Competition, where she garnered the i-Dance Female Dancer 2016 award. She then continued graduate school in Hawaiʻi where she actively participated and created community projects like Creative Movement courses for the East-West Center participants as a Student Affiliate and a Foundation Scholarship Recipient and Artistang Pinoy, a platform for Filipino Artist. She also performed with and choreographed for professional dance companies in Hawaiʻi, such as Convergence Dance Theatre and Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre. As an educator, As an educator, Angela continuously works on her professional development and is currently a teacher trainee under Dr. Ama Wray, a professor at UC Irvine who created Embodiology, a performance praxis and endogenous knowledge of the Anlo-Ewe culture of the Volta region in Ghana for understanding the world through the body. She maintained a great connection with the communities through teaching in dance schools in the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Hawaiʻi. She hopes to contribute to perpetuating the significance of art and making it part of the conversation through her current research in Philippine Dance: How traditions flow through time, spaces, and body.
