With Oriana Sage

August 14 - 20, 2022

Date and Time Details: The week begins Sunday afternoon at 6:00 pm for dinner and runs through Saturday morning brunch at 10:30 am.

Location: Grünewald Guild

Address: 19003 River Road, Leavenworth, WA, USA

What will class time be like?: We will begin each class session with helpful warmups, observational practice, personal and collaborative exploration of ideas and direction, and group discussion. There will be some instruction, demoing of tools, ideas, and strategies, as well as plenty of in-class time to “play” and explore in your own drawings.

Will I need to work outside of class?: Yes if you choose to work on more complex projects.

What can I expect to create?: You will be creating a variety of interesting warm-ups, idea generation, and practice drawings that will help to determine the direction and style of your finished project. Your finished project which will consist of one ink drawing, or a small series of drawings, that incorporate your own vision, design, and personality, as well as thoughtful use of the tools learned during class. Each art piece will merge together detailed ink drawing, design, pattern, and colour.

Do I need experience to take this class?: All experience levels welcome, including beginners.

What do I need to bring to class?: Bring a selection of interesting found natural objects, such as feathers, roots, flowers, shells, and any other unique objects that inspire you. What do you find joy and wonder in when out in nature? Are you drawn to soft edges (think: animal fur, feathers, fur branches), symmetry and clear design (think: sea shells, leaf veins, honeycomb), rough and raw (think: wood texture, rocks, animal prints, claws), or harmonious flow (think: water, antlers, roots, flower petals). If you so desire, feel free to bring personal work (in any medium) that you wish to share or receive feedback on and relates to our class. Wear clothing and/or an apron that is comfortable and appropriate for ink and watercolour.

Learn to unlock your unique drawing potential through observational hand-eye connection, as you create ink drawings with joy, personally, freedom, and flow. Let go of what you think you see and capture the true essence of what you draw. In this class, we will learn to embrace the beauty of imperfection, capture shape and detail with simplicity and ease, let go of drawing frustration, and transform a simple drawing into a whimsical and meaningful piece of art. We will learn fundamental drawing elements as we explore pattern, color, and design found in nature, and practice translating these into engaging pieces of art.
