This course is a look at family photography as an inherited visual legacy. By reviewing our own family archives and exploring the stories and folklore entwined, we can weave the familial tapestry into our image-making today. The days will include group discussions, self-portraiture exercises, exploration of personal projects, and an invitation to use the tools we’ve learned in your own photo sessions.

Students explore the themes of family and community, both inherited and chosen, in whatever form it has taken. As storytellers, and are given the photography tools to create images that feel tied to their personal identity. Daily discussions/reflections and photo assignments focused on visual storytelling will help them start creating images that hold personal narrative.

By reflecting on their current visual archives and building these tools, students can leave with a sense of how they want to bring these lessons into their personal photography once they are home!
