Summer Week 6 | Wearable Art: Sew Your Own Way
With Gloria Dorve
July 19 - 25, 2026
This program is part of our Summer Program, beginning on Sunday (July 19) and ending on Saturday (July 25). Class runs Monday morning through Friday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Saturday.
A hands-on sewing course, this class invites participants to explore garment-making as a creative practice. Students will learn to construct a T-shirt–style top and either a pair of pants or a skirt, gaining foundational skills they can continue using at home.
Along the way, participants will experiment with embellishment techniques and the use of multiple fabrics within a single garment, exploring how texture, pattern, and color can transform everyday clothing into wearable art. Depending on pace and experience, students may also have time to complete one or two additional garments.
By the end of the course, participants will leave with finished pieces and the confidence to sew a T-shirt and pants or skirt independently—equipped with skills that support both functional garment construction and creative expression.

Fabric will be provided for the first T-shirt. After that, some fabric will be available for purchase, $20-$40 per garment. If you wish, for the T-shirt, bring knit fabric that is made of cotton and/or rayon – a small amount of Lycra/Spandex is fine. (54-60 inches wide, 1 ½ yards for small to XL, 2 ½ yds for 2-4 XL).
For the pants or skirt, we will use woven or knit fabric.
If you have a personal stash of fabrics and you’re looking for inspiration, bring some! Scraps are also welcome.
Bring buttons, ribbons, or other decorative baubles. Some will be provided.
We will have some sewing machines available for course participants. However, if you have your own sewing machine we highly recommend bringing it with you.
