Summer Week 6 | Landscape Tapestry Weaving
With Becky Anne Smith
July 19 - 25, 2026
This program is part of our Summer Program, beginning on Sunday (July 19) and ending on Saturday (July 25). Class runs Monday morning through Friday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Saturday.
This immersive weaving course invites participants to translate landscape into cloth through small-scale tapestry weaving. Working on tapestry looms, students will create at least one postcard-sized tapestry inspired by the landscape around us—or a beloved landscape carried in memory.
Much of the class will take place outdoors, allowing time for observation, sketching, and color study drawn directly from the surrounding environment. Through guided exploration of basic tapestry techniques, students will learn how to build imagery, texture, and atmosphere through fiber, color, and pattern.
This course emphasizes slow looking, material responsiveness, and the joy of weaving as a way of noticing place. No prior tapestry experience is required; beginners are welcome.
What creative modalities are used in this course?
Weaving on a frame loom.
What can I expect to create in this class?
Participants can expect to create at least 1x postcard-sized tapestry, though additional tapestries may be finished pending time and enthusiasm.
What will class time be like?
Class time will include time for demonstrations and instruction.
Will I need to work outside of class?
Though not required, students may choose to use open studio time to continue work on their projects.
Do I need experience to take this class?
All levels of experience are welcome!
What do I need to bring to class?
If there are any personal items you would like to incorporate into your weaving (like specific yarns, ribbons, or roving), bring that, too. All essential materials will be provided.
