Summer Week 5 | Pitcher This: Ceramic Pitcher-Making
With Alexander Kamola
July 12 - 17, 2026
This program is part of our Summer Program, beginning on Sunday (July 12) and ending on Friday (July 17). Class runs Monday morning through Thursday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Friday.
In this hands-on ceramics course, students will explore pitcher-making through hand-building, using Alex Kamola’s distinctive coil-building technique. Participants will learn how to construct functional pitcher forms while paying close attention to proportion, balance, and the relationship between body, spout, and handle.
Through demonstration and guided making, students will develop an understanding of how coils can be used to create strong, fluid forms that are both sculptural and functional. Emphasis will be placed on process, experimentation, and refining technique as students build one or more pitcher forms.
This course is well-suited for beginner students as well as those with some prior clay experience who are interested in expanding their hand-building skills and exploring the expressive potential of the ceramic pitcher.
What creative modalities are used in this course?
Ceramics (Hand-building)
What can I expect to create in the course?
Participants can expect to create at least 1x pitcher, glazed and ready to use. Dedicated and experienced students may be able to make more than 1x pitcher, though efficient time management and a solid technical foundation would be necessary.
What will class time be like?
Students will focus on working with coils and each day will vary depending on the project. Special attention to clay drying and firing needs will be considered.
Will I need to work outside of class?
Yes, it is recommended that you spend short sessions in-studio in the mid- to late afternoon. Clay needs time to dry before additional new clay can be added. Without afternoon/evening studio time, it would be very difficult to create a finished and usable pitcher in five days.
Do I need experience to take this class?
No prior ceramic experience is necessary. Beginners are welcomed and encouraged!
What do I need to bring to class?
A willingness to get muddy (and clothes to match!).
