This program is part of our Summer Program, beginning on Sunday (July 12) and ending on Friday (July 17).  Class runs Monday morning through Thursday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Friday.

Learning from various ‘masterworks’ comes from copying. Skill-based learning provides a level of confidence and an understanding of time-tested methods.  This course uses two methods – Barge plates and a Zorn palette – to explore and practice drawing, painting, and color.

Charles Bargue and Jean Leon Gerome developed a set of sequenced lithographs in the early 19th century to teach by doing. The lithographs reveal insights into methodical drawing steps, all done through observation. With guidance, a student gains high-level skills that later inform her art, no matter if it’s realistic or abstract.  The “Zorn Palette” explores color combinations using a limited number of basic colors used in combination to form a robust palette of possible colors that create rich works of art.
