This week-long course is part of our Summer Program, beginning on Sunday, June 21st and ending on Saturday, June 27th. Class takes place Monday morning through Friday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Saturday.

If you have ever marveled at a Guild mug – particularly our “Art Faith” mugs – or thought to yourself “What a beautiful ceramic object! I would like to make my own!,” now you can! Master ceramic artist Jim Halvorson is back to share his clay wisdom.

This hands-on pottery wheel course introduces students to the essential techniques of wheel throwing, from centering clay to shaping, refining, and trimming forms. Guided demonstrations and individualized instruction will support you as you build skills step-by-step, beginning with foundational cylinders and bowls and progressing toward more complex forms, including teapots.

Throughout the course, students will have opportunities to experiment with a range of throwing and alteration techniques, developing both technical confidence and a deeper understanding of form, balance, and function. Emphasis is placed on process, practice, and repetition—allowing skills to develop through thoughtful exploration rather than perfection.

What will class time be like?

Throughout the course, you’ll learn the essential techniques of wheel throwing, from centering clay to shaping and trimming your pieces. You will be guided through the process, starting with the basics from centering to constructing tea pot forms.  In addition to hands-on learning, you’ll have the chance to experiment with different techniques.

Due to the nature of pottery (drying & bisque) this course will focus on techniques rather than finished projects.

Will I need to work outside of class?

Students may choose to work outside of class. The course instructor may be in the studio in the afternoons as well.

Do I need experience to take this class?

This course is geared towards beginners potters, however experienced potters are welcome.

What do I need to bring to class?

Clothing you are comfortable getting clay on.
