This week-long course is part of our Summer Program, beginning on Sunday, June 21st and ending on Saturday, June 27th. Class takes place Monday morning through Friday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Saturday.

This course is a beloved annual gathering led by long-time Guild faculty, Jan Krist, welcoming both new and returning songwriters into a week for creative renewal. With years of shared songs and stories as its foundation, this retreat continues to offer a trusted space for deep listening, thoughtful craft, and meaningful connection.

Participants will explore the essential elements of songwriting (song structure, melody, harmonization, and lyrical intention) while engaging group discussion and  daily writing prompts with generous time for writing and reflection. Throughout the week, songwriters will share works in progress, learn practical tools for shaping meaning, and support one another in the creative process. The retreat concludes with the polishing and performance of new songs, celebrating community and the craft of songwriting.

What creative modalities are used in this course?

You can expect to learn about song construction, melody construction, harmonization, and components of songwriting

Will I need to work outside of class?

If you desire to create complex or ambitious project, you should expect to spend additional time working outside of class.

Do I need experience to take this class?

All experience levels welcome, including beginners. It’s helpful if you have some skill on an instrument, like a guitar, piano, or ukulele.

What do I need to bring to class?

Bring your favorite notebook & writing utensils, along with files of songs you are listening to, poems you would like to share, or literature on songwriting that you love. You are encouraged to share these materials with the class. Instruments are welcome!
