This 6-Day course is part of our annual Spring Sacred Arts (SSA) Program, beginning on Sunday, May 10th and ending on Friday, May 15th. Class takes place Monday morning through Thursday morning, with additional programming on Sunday and Friday.

This class is an introduction to the practice of kiln-fused glass. Over the course of the week students will become familiar with handling and cutting flat glass, judging compatibility, design approaches, and the basics of writing a schedule and programming a kiln. In the studio we will try various techniques and temperatures to achieve different effects, and will explore slumping shallow forms to create bowls and plates. Students will learn about the tools, techniques, tips and tricks for making fused art, and will be given further resources to pursue this challenging craft.

The objective of this class is to give students with little or no prior knowledge of fused glass the basic information and techniques of the craft, so that they can leave with several pieces of glass art that they are happy with, but also with a good understanding of what does and doesn’t work in the studio, and what is safe or unsafe.

What will class time be like?

In this course you will learn the foundational knowledge of basic types of fusing processes through daily projects that approach the medium with different effects.

Will I need to work outside of class?

Not necessary. All projects can be completed during class time. If inspired, students can work outside of class time, but due to the size of the kiln and the firing schedules there is a limit to the quantity.

Do I need experience to take this class?

This class welcomes beginner and advanced glass artists alike.

What do I need to bring to class?

Closed toed shoes required, long pants encouraged, natural fibers recommended. You may bring a personal notebook for sketching and notes if you like.
