Explore basic hand sewing techniques, the philosophy of slow stitching, and principles of design. This course invites participants to explore slow stitching as a contemplative practice. Slow stitching is a process of needlework or hand sewing, similar to traditional embroidery or hand quilting, but without restrictions. The practice consists of repetitive strokes and stitches which can create a soothing and comforting sense of calmness. Throughout the course, we will utilize the Guild’s natural setting to both ground and inspire ourselves in our process.

Participants will create five pieces that integrate the techniques from class: texture and the running stitch, repurposing materials, density, layers, and incorporating nature.

Daily schedule:

  • Slow walk (10 mins)
  • Mindfulness check-in (5 min)
  • Free stitch (30 mins)
  • Topic (20 mins)
  • Demo + examples (10 mins)
  • Practice time (75 mins)
  • Reflection write (5 mins)
  • Class share out (15 mins)
  • Clean up (10 mins)

Session One: Overview + texture
Using running stitch to create texture + movement

Session Two: Re-purpose
Using old handkerchiefs to stitch on. We’ll also explore the weight of fabric, how does light fabric change the experience?

Session Three: Density
Use quilted or layered fabric to experience stitching with different weight/density. How does thick or heavy fabric change the
stitches?

Session Four: Patchwork/layers
Using scraps to create a patchwork or layers. What are the possibilities of design expression with different fabrics?

Session Five: Incorporating nature
Using twigs, branches, or found objects. How does adding objects bring in more of a sense of place into the piece?
