In this course, students will engage with, wrestle with, and journey towards Hope. We will read and discuss the work of modern poets and essayists who write on individual and collective hope, including Lucille Clifton, Franny Choi, Jericho Brown, Adam Zagajewski, Joy Harjo, and Naomi Shihab Nye. This is a generative class where students will be guided through writing exercises inspired by the texts and class discussions. Optional studio time is available for instructor questions and additional writing time. All writing genres and levels are welcome.

Students will engage in close reading of the provided poems and essays, then be guided through writing exercises that explore the course theme. This is a generative writing class. By the end of the week, students will have approximately 12-15 writing drafts awaiting further editing.

Each day, students will begin with group reading and discussion of the provided poems and essays. Then, they will be guided through writing prompts that highlight the course theme. Optional studio time is available for instructor questions and additional writing time. All writing genres and levels are welcome.
