In this generative workshop, students will explore their own relationship with nature and their internal landscape via the contemplative art of reading and writing Japanese poetics, including the zuihitsu, a hybrid Japanese prose/poetry form which uses fragmentation and juxtaposition to loosely “follow the brush,” as well as the haiku, haibun, tanka and renga forms. We will read classic and contemporary examples by writers including Kimiko Hahn, Monica Hand and Justin Chin and try our hand at these forms. Students will be guided by writing prompts, our own wanderings on the land and our readings.
– Introduction to Japanese poetics + zuihitsu, haiku, haibun, tanka and renga
– Writing with the land (writing in response to the environment)
– Learning how to write & revise (critical response process workshop)
