February Artist Talk

With Alona Stroup and Lucy Bell

February 26, 2023

Date and Time Details: February 26th from 6:00-7:00 pm PT

Location: Online via Zoom

Join us Sunday, February 26th at 6 pm PST, in conversation with Lucy Bell, an artist and illustrator based in Northern California. She is primarily a painter but also utilizes textiles and clay to convey her ideas. These mediums allow for varying degrees of luminosity, softness, and fragility to manifest in each piece.

Alona introduces us to Lucy with the following:

“In her time at the Guild she created a series of pottery pieces, crows primarily, and the frame for what will become a hand mirror, the edges of which she has covered in apple seeds. She has also, as of recently, integrated felting into her practice. The transition off the canvas seems to have come easily for Bell.

Bell depicts people, places, and, most often as of late, objects imbued with symbolism. In particular, candles. She has an incredible knack for illuminations on canvas–her pieces glow. This is a woman who knows and understands warm light.

But she would like to know light better. She tells me she is curious about candles as religious objects. She sends me articles to read with titles like the Myth of Eve the Temptress from the American Academy of Religion. She laughs with me over the moon.

This smacks, to me, of the heart of the Guild–a place built by and for people with questions like this: How quickly should your heart change? What in a candle touches our spirits? “

Join us to continue the conversation with Alona and Lucy!
