Connecting Hand, Eye, and Soul Through Nature Drawing

With Oriana Sage

July 16 - 20, 2023

Location: Grunewald Guild Fiber Library Studio

What will class time be like?: Class will begin with warm-up exercises and group discussion. We will then transition into some demos of ideas and processes and will spend the remainder of class exploring the subject matter and playing with ideas.

Will I need to work outside of class?: Yes, participants wishing to create complex or ambitious projects should expect to spend additional time working outside of class.

What can I expect to create?: You will create a series of small works exploring your chosen subject matter, through a variety of exercises. These explorations will lead you to create at least one larger, more planned + detailed watercolor and ink drawing that will capture the observations, details, and delights that you gleaned through the week.

Do I need experience to take this class?: All experience levels welcome, including beginners

What do I need to bring to class?: Bring a selection of cherished or interesting nature objects, such as gnarled wood, pinecones, shells, flowers, or any other unique object that you are drawn to. You are also welcome to forage through The Guild's beautiful grounds before our class time for inspiration and nature treasures. Wear clothing and/or apron that is comfortable and can get ink or paint on it.

Learn to unlock your unique drawing ability through observational hand-eye connection, as you create nature ink drawings with freedom, personality, and intentional observation. The exercises used will allow you to let go of what you think you see and capture the true essence of what you are actually drawing.

In this class, we will embrace the beauty of imperfection, capture shape and detail with simplicity, let go of drawing frustrations, and transform a simple drawing into a whimsical and meaningful piece of art. We will learn fundamental drawing elements as we explore observation, pattern, color, and design found in nature.
