Do I have to show up for every session?: No, you do not have to show up for every session. Open studio is self-directed and you may go to as many or as few sessions as you need.

What can I expect to create?: You can expect to create a few pieces either through hand-building or by using the pottery wheel. After pieces have been fired you will also be able to decorate them with glaze. Note that open studio is not for production potters creating a high volume of work.

Do I need experience to take this class?: Pottery open studio is for all experience-level makers to work independently without instruction while being a part of a creative community. For beginners, a demonstration on working with clay can be requested.

What do I need to bring to class?: Comfortable work clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. The studio has a limited number of aprons so if you have a personal apron we recommend that you bring it. CLOSED-TOE SHOES are critical for studio safety, and are required by all participants! You will be around sharp objects and heavy equipment. Those without closed-toed shoes will not be allowed to join the session.

Minimum age of participants: 9

  • $40.00 – Open Studio Base Price (clay not included)

Join us throughout the month of April to get your hands muddy at the Pottery Studio!  Open studio is great for makers that want to work with clay but don’t wish to buy and maintain pottery equipment. You can use this time to practice pottery technique or work on personal projects. Each session is 2 hours long and makers will have space to store work between sessions. Sessions will be hosted by a studio volunteer or staff who will provide basic assistance.

Open studio is $40 per person with access to all sessions and includes:

 Access to all studio equipment and tools
 Use of underglazes and glazes available at the Guild
 2 kiln firings

You may bring your own clay, use your clay from previous sessions, or purchase additional clay for $15-20 per bag.

Coming from out of town?  Contact us to inquire about overnight campus lodging options and costs.

Financial assistance is available.  Contact director@grunewaldguild.com for more information.
