Finding Your Poetic Voice

What will class time be like?: We will start each class by reading the work of modern poets together, discussing the craft and technique employed by each poet. Then, we will engage in guided writing exercises. Each class will close with an invitation to read these early drafts and provide positive feedback to your peers.

Will I need to work outside of class?: No, all projects can be completed within the allotted class time.

What can I expect to create?: Students will finish the course with approximately 20 poetry drafts in a variety of forms and themes.

Do I need experience to take this class?: All experience levels welcome, including beginners.

What do I need to bring to class?: Your favorite writing medium, whether a blank journal, laptop, or iPad.

In this course, we will read the work of modern poets who write at the intersections of identity, race, gender, privilege, oppression, and grief. We will also practice writing in a variety of poetic forms, including the sonnet, the abecedarian, the burning haibun, and more. We will participate in guided writing exercises, share our early drafts, and provide positive feedback to our peers. Finally, we will explore various brainstorming practices, including the compost heap and florilegium. Come prepared to write, write, write.
