Creativity is the mind at play.  So often at writers’ retreats we set out pen to paper, or fingers to keys, with a feeling of anxiousness, hoping we can deliver something out of nothing in the short time we have.  Creativity would prefer a less stressful, more playful atmosphere, but too often when the pressure is off, we aren’t listening for the muse, we’re “busy” with other things.

For this workshop we’ll look at chords, melody, and words, in playful ways, borrowing cues from some of the most creative writers we know, and managing these materials in childlike ways. We will use the practice of meditation, and morning writing to open ourselves to the creative process, and because so much of that process happens in solitary places, we will spread out and use the whole of the Guild campus; observing, seeing, and recording what the muse has to say.

Do I need experience to take this class?
Some experience is necessary. You should be able to play an instrument and accompany yourself, but you don’t need to have any songwriting experience.

What can I expect to create?
Expect to create a new song and perform it for the community at our finale evening!

Will I need to work outside of class?
Yes, students wishing to create complex or ambitious projects should expect to spend additional time working outside of class.

What do I need to bring to class?
You will need to bring printouts of old lyrics you’ve abandoned, melodies you’ve loved, rhythms that make you happy, paper, pens, scissors, glue sticks, and a journal.
